SO WHAT IS AN ELOPEMENT ANYWAY?

In my head I used to think of an elopement as something a couple did when they wanted to run off to Vegas and get married without anyone knowing. After photographing a number of small weddings and elopements, I can say the modern definitely of "elopement" has definitely changed. To me, an elopement is a small wedding designed intentionally by the couple to reflect what matters most to them - their commitment to one another, their closest family and friends, and doing it all in a place that is special to them.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SMALL WEDDING AND AN ELOPEMENT?

A small wedding is usually booked at an actual venue that can accommodate guests and has a set date.  Small weddings usually have up to 50 people and might involve some elements of a more traditional wedding day. Elopements typically only include the couple, an officiant and maybe a few witnesses. The date is more flexible, and the destination might involve hiking, travel, or something adventurous that the couple has in mind for their special day. That being said, there is no one way to do an elopement!

CAN YOU HELP WITH PLANNING OUR ELOPEMENT?

That's what I'm here for! Based in Washington and Jackson Hole, I consider myself an expert in both places. I also enjoy seeing new places and love researching and scouting out the best spots. I can help you choose the perfect location for your elopement, provide advice on timing for the best lighting, and suggest vendors to help you enhance your experience.

DO WE HAVE TO HIKE TO HAVE AN EPIC ELOPEMENT?

Absolutely not. What is amazing about Washington and Jackson Hole is that both have incredible scenery right off the side of the road. I know a number of locations with either minimal walking or no hiking.

DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH LARGER WEDDINGS?

I photographed large weddings for 10 years, and while I still photograph a very small number of larger weddings per year, the weddings that resonate most with me are under 40 guests.

what does a full day elopement look like?

When I first started photographing elopements, couples came to me looking for just a few hours of coverage. But your wedding day deserves so much more than that. Below are a few full day elopement ideas to get your inspiration flowing.

The Coastal Road Trip

Wake up in a small cabin on the coast of Washington, listening to the waves crashing against the seastacks just off-shore.

Eat breakfast together and drink coffee on your patio, enjoying the smell of the ocean air and sounds of the seagulls.

Start getting ready in separate rooms. Put on makeup, your dress or suit, write those last-minute vows and prep for a full day of adventure.

See each other for the first time as you walk out onto the beach together. Soak up a walk together on the beach, taking in the sights and sounds.

Drive to a rocky scenic point along the coast and say your vows. Shed some tears, pop some bubbly, and take photos in an epic location.

Drive to a nearby temperate rainforest. Explore a trail draped in moss-covered trees, towering old growth, and a babbling brook.

Eat dinner at a nearby restaurant overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a sunset walk and photos on the beach. What an epic day this has been!

Return to your cabin and enjoy s'mores by way of your wood stove. The rain is starting to fall on the tin roof and you are only beginning to soak in the memories of the day. Congratulations, newlyweds.

When I first started photographing elopements, couples came to me looking for just a few hours of coverage. But your wedding day deserves so much more than that. Below are a few full day elopement ideas to get your inspiration flowing.

Grand Teton National Park Hike

You wake up in the town of Jackson, completely surrounded by beauty. Together you walk to the local coffee shop and grab your favorite pastries.

You get ready together, putting on your wedding clothes and packing up your day packs. You're sure to bring lunch and of course, your vows!

Arrive at the trailhead ready to hike. You put on your hiking boots, filled with excitement and anticipation.

You begin your hike into a deep mountain canyon. Known for it's towering canyon walls, wildlife and glacier views.

You arrive at your ceremony location, about 3 miles up the canyon. You both have a snack and get ready for the big moment.

You say your vows in one of the most beautiful settings you cold imagine. You cry happy tears and toast champagne. Time to celebrate!

We take it slow heading back down the canyon, laughing and soaking up the scenery, taking photos along the way.

We start heading back to town so you can hit up your favorite brewery. We stop along the way as the sun sets behind the Tetons. Today has been the best day of your lives!

Intimate Winter Wedding Weekend in the Cascades

You've chosen 30 of your closest family members and friends and rented a large chalet where everyone can stay for the weekend.

You have a leisurely breakfast, get into your wedding attire, then head to a casual venue you've chosen for a small ceremony and dinner.

It starts snowing heavily as the ceremony begins. Everyone us bundled up, but enjoying the experience and smiling. You say your vows!

The celebration begins with hot cocoa and spiked cider. You have a low-key dinner served by a local catering company and several guests stand up to toast you as a couple.

You LOVE to dance, so you hired a local band. You also start up a fire pit outside where everyone is making s'mores.

After the band is over you head back into town to your favorite cider house. You eat snacks, play games, and wander the town square in the snow.

Everyone heads back to the house and you stay up late, hanging out with the people that are most special to you.

You wake up and do what? Go skiing! It's a favorite past time and a group of 10 or so hit the slopes together. Afterwards you head back to the chalet joyful but tired, soaking in the beauty of your best weekend ever together.
